Has it been a year already?

Remembering Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington. Barnstorm XXIV, The Eddie Adams Workshop.

It almost feels like it was yesterday.  I woke up to my phone buzzing like crazy. I was receiving reports of two photojournalists either killed or hurt really really badly in Libya.  I quickly jumped out of my bed and ran to my desk, waking up my computer from sleep.  I quickly loaded twitter, The New York Times, Facebook and other news sites to see what information I could find.

A huge lump had formed in my throat. Photojournalists Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington had been reported killed in Misurata, Libya.

“Oh, Shit!”

Mark III

Canon ruined my weekend.

It wasn’t from lack of customer service, or that I had a camera crap out on me whilst on assignment. Nor was it because a Camera body I had was defective.  It was something entirely different.

There I was, minding my own business while editing photos, and prepping them for my photoshelter achive, and a post from Josh at Hawaii Photo Rental came across my facebook feed.

“Confirmed, we have four Canon 5D Mark III cameras available to rent starting on Friday of this week.”

“Krap.” I said to myself, “I’m going to want to play with it for a weekend.”

I had been telling myself since the March 2, 2012 announcement of this highly anticipated camera that there was no need for me to buy it. There was absolutely no reason I would need a new camera, and that my 5D Mark II’s were more than enough. I decided, what the hell. I’ll rent it for the weekend.

Fire in the Sky

On my way to work at the YMCA, as I was leaving the house I noticed a strange light pattern in the sky. The clouds were formed strangely, and were lit funkily with the rising sun. I put my camera in the front seat, making it readily accessible just in case I changed my mind on photographing the sky today on my way to work. Good thing. heading down the H1, I came across this wonderful sight.

Amazing.

Bored Much?

While waiting outside of the Legal Service Center at Marine Corps Base Hawaii while On Assignment for The Associated Press, I saw that there was something pretty cool happening with the reflection in the window we (the media) had to stand behind…why were we standing behind the window and not in front of the courtroom? Trust me, that’s a whole another can of worms…

Can anyone spot the Star-Advertiser’s Craig Kojima?

Hidden Gem

Pro Bowl 2012 Golden HourMembers of the NFC team walk on field during the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium on January 29, 2012 in Honolulu, HI.

Living the in the world of tight-deadline news (especially if you are filing on east-coast deadline and you’re in Hawaii), photographers are forced to edit their entire take onsite. Most of the time we’ll send 95% of our best of the best work for the wire or for the paper, but sometimes we miss something. A cool image gets lost in the shuffle of image downloading, color correcting in ACR, cursing up a storm because our air cards don’t work, cursing up a storm because 7 different photographers are trying to transmit images, but someone’s hogging all the bandwidth…or it’s just everyone in the workroom teasing Marco. When shooting a sports assignment for Getty Images, photographers are instructed to file a ’2nd Edit’ of images. Included in the second edit is any game action the photographer may have missed in the first edit, as well as isolated stock imagery of star players. While going through my entire edit of photos from the 2012 Pro Bowl, I came across this hidden gem. While it wasn’t key action, or a photo of a single player, I thought it was some really pretty light.

In the next couple of weeks I’ll be posting blog posts about workflow and some of the stuff I do as a photojournalist. Thanks for looking.

Pro Bowl 2012

The 2012 Pro Bowl has come and gone, and with the upcoming Rematchbowl…I mean Super Bowl XLVI no one really cares about nor tried hard at the Pro Bowl. It was my first football game in awhile, but it was a lot of fun working along side Marco, Eugene, Hugh, Jay, Jamm and Scott. Good times! More Images after the break. Clear Sunset

Clear as the eye can see. Far as the eye can see, not a cloud in the sky. This past weekend, I headed out to Kakaako Waterfront Park in search of some features in some golden hour light.

I gotta hand it to you…

Eight month old Cooper Wall Wagner sticks his fingers in President Barack Obama’s mouth as he poses for a picture with Cooper’s parents Greg, right, and Meredith Wagner in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Dec. 25. The President and Mrs. Obama made their annual trip to greet current and retired members of the US military and their families and ate a Christmas Day meal in the Anderson Hall mess hall at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

So the frame above this is quite funny. But let me get to it…thats right folks…it’s Story Time with Kent! Bear with me, as I’ve found it quite fun to ramble on in my blog posts. Seriously though, it’s been a crazy couple of days. First night of POTUS’s vacation in Hawaii, he went ahead and deviated fromt eh norm. Typically with POTUS arrivals he’ll jet from Hickam to Kailua, and the ‘travel pool’ will get a lid, which allows us to go home. Come Christmas morning, as I found myself not caring that there were some gifts with my name on them wrapped underneath the tree, nor the fact that my mom was preparing an awesome christmas meal for the rest of the family’s breakfast, I slung my cameras over my shoulders and headed, with my pops in tow, out the door…the bass heavy beat of dub-step stomped it’s way through the air as I walked out the door. But wait?! What’s this? It’s dub-step CHRISTMAS MUSIC?!

“Today’s gonna kick ass.” I told myself.

It’s that time of year again…

US President Barack Obama waves as he disembarks from Air Force One at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Hawaii, Friday, Dec. 23, 2010.

So It’s that time of year again. The President is chillin in his swanky vacation rental in Kailua and my winter break is pretty much booked. But who am I to complain? (I think it’s just the photographer in me. We complain about everything.) I have my health, I have work, and I’m photographing the leader of the free world. How awesome is that??

A day that will live in Infamy…

A Marine firing detail prepares for a memorial service for the 70th anniversary of the attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu on December 7, 2011 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On the morning of December 7, 1941 a surprise military attack was conducted by aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy against the U.S. Pacific Fleet being moored in Pearl Harbor becoming a major catalyst for the United States entering World War II.

I was lucky growing up; my parents believe that a deep understanding of my cultural heritage was essential to me growing up into a well rounded young man. Perhaps one of the more important things my mom stressed besides cultural understanding was that of an understanding of history and paying attention to not only every day details, but details that have happened throughout history itself.
