I started to research cat colonies around oahu. There are quite a few, and what's even more interesting is the network of volunteers that, on an almost daily basis feed the cats, get them neutered/spayed and cared for. Some volunteers have been doing it for more than a decade, some have even adopted some of the cats from these colonies.

I ended up mainly photographing in the Hawaii Kai area, specifically the Park & Ride transit depot and the overlook coming from Hanauma Bay. There is a sizeable cat colony at the park n ride, and the nice thing was that the volunteers will put out food for the cats, and the hungry felines will congregate aorund the food, making for a decent photo of them clustering up.

While nothing ended up running, since the Art Director was apparently married to a stock photo that they felt better illustrated the story (despite it looking very similar – albeit not as good as one of my photos), this assignment was quite the learning experience and it made me think differently about my approach to photographing different kinds of situations.
