I quickly opened an email browser and opened gmail. I needed to email Cory. Did I know Chris Hondros? Did I know Tim Hetherington? No. I didn't But what I would find out later that year is that both of them were scheduled to be apart of the 24th Eddie Adams Workshop, which I would be attending in the fall of 2011. Mr. Hondros was a alumni of Barnstorm, having attended as a student 18 years prior, and returned as a member of the black team. Mr. Hetherington was a prominent film maker. His more noteable work is Restrepo. Catch it on Netflix if you get a chance. It's...wow. How Mr. Hondros ties to me is that he and my real good friend and colleague Cory Lum were roommates at the workshop, back in the early 90s. Cory shared stories of him and Mr. Hondros at the workshop, and how they kept in touch after they had parted ways. Cory would return home to Hawaii and his budding career as a Hawaii based photojournalist, working for the Honolulu Advertiser, and later freelancing for the European Pressphoto Agency, Getty Images, The New York Times, and the Los Angles Times. Meanwhile, Mr. Hondros would spend much of his career as a staffer with Getty Images, covering all of the major conflicts on the 1990s. I didn't know Mr. Hondros or Mr. Hetherington personally, but somehow I had been affected by their passing. I felt like I didn't have a right to be sad, to be so broken-hearted that they're gone. That night, after it was confirmed that both Mr. Hondros and Hetherington had lost their lives in Libya I drove up to the Tantalus lookout where I saw on the rock wall overlooking Honolulu and began to think about life, and about the events of the day. Flash forward to October 2011 during the Eddie Adams Workshop. My team's photo editor was Newsweeks' Jamie Wellford, who was a close friend of the late Mr. Hetherington, gave a deep speech about Mr. Hetherington and Hondros and how much they wanted to attend that years barnstorm. We held a small ceremony for those who lost their lives up at Eddie's farm. The atmosphere was heavy and solem, and a lot for me to take in. Tonight I will toast a beer in their honor.
