A 45 minute exposure of the tree on the Ewa side of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Department.

  • A variation of the camera obscura, the Pinhole camera is a fan favorite among analogue photographers young and old.  During the end of the Spring semester i spent many weeks, and hours in the photo lab, working on my final projects prints.  I chose to do Kallitype for my semeter project, and since each print took an hour to process, I had a lot of time on my hands.  So as a means to make the waiting easier, I decided to try my hand with a pinhole camera that the lab owns.  I loaded up a couple of film holders, setup a tripod and began exposing, with some exposures lasting more than 90 minutes.

The pinhole camera with a loaded film holder, during an exposure.  the bamboo photo down the page is the resulting image.

  • The pinhole is unapoligetic.  The amount of time spent rendering the image was in some senses very similar to the Kallitype process.  The amount of time consumed meant that you absolutely DO NOT want to mess up, and you want to nail it on the first go.  What was neat about the near dark night scenes I was photographing was that the objects that were illuminated seemed to appear out of the darkness, like the objects were sculpted out of the darkness.

    Thanks for looking!
